About Snežna Jama (Snow Cave) Nature Reserve

Snežna Jama (Snow Cave) Nature Reserve is situated at an altitude of approximately 1610 meters near the Raduha peak in the eastern Kamnik–Savinja Alps of northern Slovenia. This exceptional karst cave boasts one of the largest perennial ice deposits in the region, formed and preserved in near-freezing conditions year-round, making it a rare example of a natural underground glacier. The cave extends over 1,200 meters in length and descends roughly 150 meters below the entrance, featuring massive ice blocks, frozen waterfalls, and intricate stalactites composed of both ice and mineral deposits. The cave environment supports specialized fauna, including troglobitic invertebrates adapted to cold, dark conditions.

Historically, Snežna Jama was first described scientifically in the 19th century and has been protected as a nature reserve since 1965 to conserve its fragile microclimate and rare geological features. Visitors are drawn to the cave for guided tours that reveal the spectacular ice formations and provide insight into the cave’s glaciological and geological significance. Above ground, the surrounding alpine environment offers hiking trails with panoramic views of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps and diverse flora and fauna typical of the high-mountain limestone karst habitat.

The reserve is an important site for scientific research, particularly in the fields of climatology, geology, and biology, due to the cave’s stable climatic conditions and well-preserved natural ice. Its controlled access helps maintain the cave’s delicate ice formations, making it a prime example of sustainable tourism in a sensitive karst ecosystem.
